John Predmore: To the Frontiers - Ignatian Artists, Poets, Writers, and Seekers

I am a Jesuit priest of the USA East Province who has an avocation of binding art and creativity to spirituality. I have a SoWa (South End) studio in Boston and I give retreats and spiritual direction using creative techniques to make a person's Ignatian prayer particular and unique. Ignatian Spirituality is the cornerstone of my work; art, poetry, prose is a way to help us get to the heart of conversations in prayer.

My Third Painting

I finished my third painting and I have to say that I am liking this artistic expression. My instructor keeps complimenting me. It is amazing to see how a blank canvas begins to take shape until it emerges into a statement. As I finished this painting I said to myself, "I would like to chat with this guy because he is life experienced, which has made him gentle and content."

I gasped when the instructor asked me to paint a portrait because there is such detail to include. It is difficult enough to draw a face, which is easier to do because you can always erase and re-erase, but in a painting, the effort is slower. I'm somewhat pleased at what I am seeing. When parish matters get stressful, I feel like painting.
